A JOB, NO ROOF | M6 | 66 minutes

Working from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., 5 days a week, sometimes with a permanent contract, without having the means to afford a roof over your head… this is the tragic daily reality for many French people. The cause, of course, is falling purchasing power, but also a particularly tight property market and a cruel lack of places in social housing.

Diego, 37, a maintenance worker, has no choice but to live in a hotel. In the Basque country, small apartments are rare. And on his salary alone, this single man has a hard time convincing landlords. Charles, on the other hand, is a computer science teacher. He earns a comfortable salary of 2 000 euros a month. But on a fixed-term contract. This divorced father is not reassuring either estate agencies or private individuals. He was welcomed into a village of homeless people!

Others, like Pedro, sleep in their cars.  He’s a truck driver, and his truck has become his bedroom. After his flat-sharing arrangement in the Paris region came to an end, he was never able to find a new home.

Who are these homeless workers? What’s their day-to-day life like? How do they cope?

A portrait of France’s working homeless.
