Bolivia: in the heart of the flood | France 5 | Les Routes de l'Impossible

In the steaming undergrowth of the Bolivian jungle a family collects the rotting husks from giant almond trees. With their bare hands they extract the nuts that contain the almonds exported to gourmet stores throughout the world. Edgar has to transport them in his old truck to a processing plant as fast as he can. Like him, Ramiro carries another of the riches plundered from the forest: timber. The road could be a healthy jaunt, but in Bolivia the continuing slaughter of the forest is upsetting the ecosystem and creating unprecedented imbalances in the climate. Exceptional rainfall surprises the two drivers and the rivers of Amazonia flood millions of hectares. The main road to the capital, La Paz, is under water. Within a few days the country is cut in two and more than 100,000 people are affected. Hostages to landslides and the fury of the waters, the journey of the two men, as they struggle to save their livelihood and their trucks, turns into an incredible torment in the heart of the flood.
