Housewife, butler, man servant, private secretary. These jobs, often chosen for lack of other marketable skills, involve a very particular life style and state of mind. Housed, fed, becoming a part of the family, their work condition is complex. These household employees are a part of the life style of those who hire them. They observe their employers and often cannot keep themselves from imitating their manners, coming even to resemble them. It is said that there are no good domestic servants without good masters. There are about 900,000 household employers in France today. The number has increased 20% since 1992. In spite of appearances, things haven’t changed much…love, hate, humiliation, affection.
