In French Guiana, at Kourou, in order to protect the European space center and assure the security of the Ariane rocket launchings…one man upon six is a military man. Among the 800 legionnaires in Kourou, all but the officers wear the white kepi and aren’t allowed to get married. Six hundred single men for the Kourou girls. Every April 29th, the Foreign Legion commemorates the battle of Camerone in Mexico, where the legend of the Legion began. The three days of the festival finish every year in apotheosis with the election of Miss White Kepi-the one who will represent the Foreign Legion in Guiana. That evening, the young girls have to work up their courage to parade in their bathing suits in front of 800 over-excited legionnaires of the foreign regiment. But for all the candidates, the prize is worth it : two thousand francs (about $300) and a round-trip ticket to Paris….
