On February 12 2015, a French couple, Sylvain, a retired seaman, and Marinette, a doctor, are murdered by a gang of burglars armed with machetes and Kalashnikovs, who break into their home in the middle of the night. Sylvain was slain with two bullets in the back and his wife killed by a blow of an axe to her head. A crime that is just one more in a long series: eight French people were killed on the island in 2015 in similar circumstances. The paradise island has turned into hell. Why have expatriates become the preferred targets of such barbarous attacks? How are the French who have settled on this sublime island in the Indian Ocean going about protecting themselves?
