The lost children of oulan bator | Reportage | Arte
Oulan Bator, population 700,000, capital of Mongolia. Almost all the coal and copper mines of this ex-State of the Soviet Union have closed in the past ten years, putting whole families into the street. But at Oulan Bator, the temperatures can reach deadly levels. Seven months out of twelve, it descends below thirty degrees centigrade, sometimes even to forty. The street children, more vulnerable than the adults, are desperate to take shelter wherever they can to survive. In building entrances or even in the sewers. We followed Delguer, a little five-year girl, and her brother Monké, nine years old, who struggle every night in order to stay alive for the next day.
