TRANSPLANTS AND ORGAN DONATIONS, THE RACE AGAINST THE CLOCK | TF1 | Appels d'urgence
In France nearly 14,000 people are waiting for transplants. A kidney, a liver, a heart… for many it’s a question of life or death. But each year only 4,500 people receive one and more than 200 sick people die for want of a transplant in time. Because donors are rare. So, as soon as one of them is identified, a veritable race against the clock gets underway. Doctors often have just a few hours to remove the organ and transplant it, sometimes at several hundred kilometres distance. We followed the work of these doctors in search of donors and that of the police who clear the roads, sometimes at the risk of their own lives, to gain precious minutes. Through this documentary we meet some extraordinary people like Marion, a girl of 11, who is waiting for a kidney so that she can at last play with her friends, or Naima, who has decided to donate one of her kidneys to her brother.
